Revealing the Secret: How does Adhesive Vinyl work?

It takes no magic or complex science to explain the inner workings of Adhesive Vinyl. What’s striking about this material is how easy it can be applied! Unlike its sister, Heat Transfer Vinyl, Adhesive Vinyl requires no heat source to complete its mission.

For us to explain it better, we need to break down what it’s made of. Adhesive Vinyl is created by combining two sheets of materials: a flat, thin-layered vinyl equipped with a pressure-sensitive adhesive and a paper backing otherwise known as a release liner. This structure makes the experience almost similar to using regular sticker paper. The only difference is the involvement of a transfer tape.

Before you scratch your head and wonder about the mystery of transfer tape, you can check out our blog here for a comprehensive introduction about it.

Transfer tape is pivotal to the seamless application of vinyl to any solid surface. It’s a handy item to secure that graphics will be transferred exactly the way you envision them.

To grasp a clearer picture of how it works, let’s have a rundown of its step-by-step application procedure.

Adhesive Vinyl Application Guide

Working with Adhesive Vinyl is a beginner-friendly process. Regardless of the level of experience you have in performing vinyl transfers, you will find yourself at such a level of ease doing the task. Just follow these couple of basic steps and you’ll get the result you’ve been aiming for all this time.

Step 1- Create Your Cut File

For our newbie crafters, a cut file means the digital copy of the design you choose to use for your project. Depending on the software you have, the file format can range from SVG to PNG and JPEG, to name a few. You have the freedom to choose if you’ll make your own, resource some free cut file or grab directly from online stores.

Next, you need to scale your design. For this part, we advise you to use a ruler or a measuring tape to get the precise measurement of the design’s size. Once you’ve got the exact numbers, you can then proceed with the actual scaling of the image.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Just in case you’re an HTV enthusiast and got used to mirroring the design before cutting it into the vinyl, here’s an important reminder: mirroring or flipping the image is not naturally part of adhesive vinyl’s application procedure. In general application, you don’t need to mirror your design since you’ll be using  transfer tape to transfer it on the base material (more on this below). On the contrary, mirroring is essential if the graphic or images are intended to be applied on the inside of a window or on the back of clear surfaces like glass. This will guarantee you that the design is in the right orientation.

Step 2- Cut the Design

After you have your cut file prep, it’s time to cut it into the vinyl. When loading your vinyl into the cutting machine, remember that the backing paper is the side facing down the cutting mat.

Another thing that you need to be mindful of before you press that CUT button is to check and adjust the cut settings. Make sure that you got the right setting for the type of vinyl you are using.

One final thing, perform a test cut to see if the settings will flawlessly deliver a kiss cut or if it will only cut through the vinyl layer and not get through the release liner. Depending on the result (if it did cut through the backing paper or did not even get through the vinyl) you need to make an adjustment to either decrease or increase the blade depth settings.

Step 3- Weed Away Excess Vinyl

After perfectly cutting your vinyl, gently remove the excess part around the design using a weeding tool.

Step 4- Use a Transfer Tape

After weeding out the excess vinyl, simply add a layer of transfer tape on top of the vinyl side. Smooth it out using a squeegee on both sides. Once you securely apply the tape, you then remove the release liner leaving the entire design perfectly transferred on the tape.

TIP: Cut your transfer tape a little bit bigger than the size of your decal so that you can easily peel off the backing paper of the vinyl.

Step 5-Transfer the Design

At long last! You are at the final step of the process. Before applying the design to the surface, make sure that it is clean. Precisely place your decal on the spot you wanted it to be transferred. Since the adhesive is pressure-activated, use your squeegee or other available scrapping tools to give it a nice press.

TIP: Let the top corner of the transfer tape stick out so you can easily remove it afterward.

Gently remove the transfer tape to get your first look at your very first Adhesive Vinyl Project. (If the design is not adhering well, just add a couple more of rubbing till it applies well.)

The wonder of Adhesive Vinyl clearly has sparked more interest than one can ever imagine. To uncover more truths about this product, let’s answer some common and frequently asked questions that have been puzzling some of our fellow crafters:

Can you use adhesive vinyl on shirts?

Now, I’m pretty sure some of you want to know if Adhesive Vinyl works well too on shirts, but I’m sorry to tell you that the answer is No!

Though it absolutely adheres to smooth surfaces, fabrics like cotton where shirts are commonly made, wouldn’t give you a durable transfer. While you may discover soon that it might stick for a while, but don’t raise your hopes because the adhesive will not hold against washing. Instead, we recommend Heat Transfer Vinyl for shirts and most types of fabrics.

Does Adhesive Vinyl last outside?

We know that your mind now is overflowing with creative ideas and projects you can’t wait to try. But if in any chance you doubt its capability for outdoor use, we gladly affirm with a BIG YES!

Adhesive Vinyl is an excellent choice to make any type of outdoor signages and decals. It surely can withstand extreme weather conditions and does not easily fade and be damaged.

Does Permanent Adhesive Vinyl stick to wood?

Wood is another great base material for vinyl crafts ideas. Permanent adhesive vinyl adheres just fine on untreated wood but there’s a way to yield a better and long-lasting outcome.

It only takes sanding paper and a little help from a coating or a primer. Bear in mind that the smoother the surface becomes, the better your vinyl will adhere. Use the sanding paper to smooth out the rough and uneven surface of the wood, then treat the wood with a primer. You can choose among polyacrylic, acrylic paint, or wood stain. After coating the wood with your base paint, you need to wait for at least 24 hours before attempting to apply your vinyl.

How do you seal vinyl with Mod Podge?

Using Mod Podge to seal your vinyl is a relatively straightforward and easy process. You simply brush over the surface. Here are a few reminders when applying Mod Podge:

  • Find a good paintbrush. You don’t want a low-quality paintbrush to annoy you when its bristles fall off and stick to the surface because then you have to pick it out one by one consuming more of your time and energy.
  • Make sure the surface is dry, clean and free from any dust or any small particles before sealing it with Mod Podge.
  • Make sure to cover the entire vinyl because you don’t want to unconsciously leave a spot unsealed.
  • You need to let the first application dry out for about 15-20 minutes before adding another layer. Commonly, 2 to 3 layers of Mod Podge will already give you a good seal.

With its proven versatility and a large display of variety, Adhesive Vinyl makes such a perfect choice to get imaginative and celebrate your creativity. No matter how big, small, simple, or complex the projects you hope to create, there is one undeniable truth here: With Adhesive Vinyl, a victorious experience is guaranteed.
